Who we are

Irish dancing first came to Barnsley in 1982, when an Irish dance teacher based in Leeds—who taught across several towns in Yorkshire—was encouraged to establish classes locally by an Irish resident, Ann Maw.

Tamara began dancing in 1986, at the age of five and went on to qualify for the World Championships in 1990, earning her place at the 1991 World Championships in Limmerick. This achievement marked the beginning of an extraordinary lifelong journey in Irish dance.

By 2003, the Barnsley school was formally established. Having decided to retire from competitive dancing, Tamara and her sister were eager to share their knowledge and pass their skills on to the next generation. The school initially focused on displays and performances and quickly became highly sought after, with dancers regularly in demand. In time, competitive dancing was reintroduced, with students progressing steadily through the grades and several qualifying for the World Championships.

Over the years, the school evolved, including a small number of name changes and a period when Tamara partnered with another teacher. Like many organisations, it faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 lockdown, after which class numbers temporarily declined, making it necessary to rebuild from the ground up.

That rebuilding phase marked a new chapter. With the support of Tamara’s niece, Natalie—who chose to step away from competitive dancing to focus on teaching—the school began to grow once again. Gradually, it developed into the thriving and welcoming community it is today. Now affiliated with the Irish dancing organisation CNRG (Croi Neamhspleách Rince Gaeilge), the school’s current dancers, both children and adults, began competing in September 2024 and have already enjoyed outstanding success. Some have progressed from beginner level to Open Championship level in just over a year—an exceptional achievement for dancers with fewer than three years’ experience.

These accomplishments reflect not only dedication and hard work, but also a genuine love of Irish dancing, proving that success and enjoyment truly go hand in hand.

Today, this legacy continues at Barnsley Dance Academy, where we are dedicated to inspiring dancers of all ages and abilities. Whether you are taking your very first steps or aiming to compete at the highest level, our academy provides expert training in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Led by passionate and experienced instructors, we focus on strong technique, discipline, fitness, and—above all—the joy of Irish dance. Our classes blend traditional Irish dancing with modern teaching methods to help each dancer grow in confidence, skill, and creativity.

At Barnsley Dance Academy, we believe in building a positive, inclusive community where dancers can form friendships, achieve personal goals, and celebrate their love of dance. From recreational classes to performance opportunities and competitive training, we offer something for every dancer.
